Our Washington, DC, office currently seeks an Intern to assist with developing activities pertaining to Russia and the North Caucasus.

Majority of work will deal with the Russian North Caucasus region and human rights issues. The intern will be responsible for researching and keeping abreast of current news and events in Russia and the North Caucasus and updating the American Committee for Peace in the Caucasus website (www.peaceinthecaucasus.org) accordingly. In addition, the intern will provide support to the project staff by assisting with program development, research, and daily administrative duties as assigned. Occasionally, work related to Eastern and Central Europe will be required as well.

Qualifications:
  • Interest in and knowledge of political developments in Russia and the North Caucasus, and human rights issues in particular.
  • Advanced level of proficiency in written Russian.
  • Native speaking proficiency in English.
  • Ability to research and use good judgment in information dissemination.
  • Readiness to learn and work with Dreamweaver software a plus.
  • College degree or graduate student with research experience.

Managing Editor: Democratic Institutions Study--Eastern Europe & Former Soviet Union

Freedom House is seeking a Managing Editor for Nations in Transit, its annual analysis of democratic development in the countries of the former Soviet Union, and Southeastern and Central Europe. The position is based in Freedom House's New York office. The principal responsibility of the Editor will be to oversee the editorial management of this publication. The candidate should have strong editing, proofreading and project management skills, and should be able to multitask. Duties will include, but are not limited to: providing editorial and research oversight for country reports, overseeing the administrative and editorial coordination of studies and reports, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of international affairs, with a focus on political conditions in the countries of the former Soviet Union, and Southeastern and Central Europe. Candidates should be familiar with assessment methodologies. Experience in research and writing on democracy and human rights issues preferred. Ability to speak more than one language is helpful. Master's degree preferred.

Program Officer - Eurasia

Description:
The Eurasia division of Freedom House is seeking a full-time Program Officer to support ongoing activities in the Eurasia region. This is a Washington, DC-based position.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support field offices in the region with program-related as well as financial and administrative needs. Participate in regular communications with field-based employees of Freedom House.
  • Support proposal writing activities.
  • Draft reports to funders.
  • Monitor news and events in the region pertaining to human rights, democracy and fundamental freedoms.
  • Ensure program compliance with Freedom House financial and administrative guidelines.
  • Cover Washington DC-based events pertaining to the region.
  • Participate as a member of the Eurasia team in all action, analysis and advocacy activities pertaining to the region.
Qualifications:
  • Past experience in program management preferred, including reporting ability and knowledge of funder account requirements.
  • A university degree in a related field. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Russian language ability preferred.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Some experience working on issues pertaining to the region.
  • A strong appreciation of the need for human rights defense work.
