Fellowship: NYU

The Department of Russian & Slavic Studies at New York University announces a new funding opportunity for students in the Interdisciplinary Master’s Degree program, a fellowship that will provide significant support for highly qualified MA students. All admitted applicants will automatically be considered for this award. Details about the fellowship and donor will be announced shortly. For now, we hope that you will inform students of this new avenue of financial support for those interested in studying Russia.

NYU’s interdisciplinary MA program provides access to Russia-related courses in departments across the university. In addition to the departmental curriculum’s particular strengths in literature, history, and film, the course of study can encompass a wide range of fields, from music and anthropology to linguistics and performance studies. With its focus on interdisciplinarity and comparative methodologies, the program can serve as excellent preparation for graduate study at the PhD level. It also provides a thorough grounding in the Russia field for terminal MA students who choose to pursue a career in this area.

Fellowship 2011: US Graduate Fellowships for Research in the South Caucasus

The American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC) announces the availability of US graduate fellowships in support of research in the South Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, and/or Azerbaijan).

Projects in all fields in the social sciences and humanities are eligible. Proposals will be judged on their quality and on the potential of the research to strengthen scholarship on the Southern Caucasus. The purpose of the fellowship is to help cover travel to and/or living expenses in the Southern Caucasus. During his/her stay in the Southern Caucasus, the fellow is expected to give an ARISC sponsored presentation on a subject related to his/her research.  The fellow will acknowledge ARISC in any publication that emerges from the research carried during the fellowship. 

Qualifications: Graduate students enrolled in accredited degree-granting programs in the US are eligible for the fellowship.

Fellowship 2011: CDS Alfa Fellowship 2011 - 2012

The Individual Advanced Research Opportunities Program (IARO) provides students, scholars and professionals with support to perform policy relevant field research, in the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. In addition to engaging in research in the region, the IARO fellowship affords scholars the opportunity to increase their understanding of critical, policy relevant issues, develop and sustain international networks, and collaborate with foreign scholars on topics vital to both the academic and policy-making communities.


Applicants to the IARO program can apply to do research in up to three countries for up to nine months. As part of the IARO fellowship, participants are provided with visa assistance, international roundtrip transportation, a monthly allowance for housing and living expenses, as well as emergency evacuation insurance. IARO fellows also have access to resources available in any of IREX’s 25 field offices.

IARO fellowships will be awarded in each of the following categories:

Gilman Spring 2011 Application

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Spring 2011 Application Open - Deadline: October 5, 2010

The Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the opening of the Spring 2011 online application for U.S. undergraduate students participating in Spring 2011 study abroad programs.  The Gilman Scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education.  The Gilman Scholarship Program is celebrating 10 years of helping nearly 6,500 Gilman Scholars study abroad and during the academic year 2010-2011, over 2,300 scholarships will be awarded!
In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a two or four-year U.S. Institution
*        United States citizen
*        Receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
*        Participating in a study abroad program that is no less than 4 weeks and no more than an academic year

Fellowship 2010: Gilman

The Gilman Scholarship application for Fall 2010 and Summer 2010 study abroad programs is available online.The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad, including Russia.

Over 1,700 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000. Undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at two-year or four-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply.

Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. 50 Critical Need Language Supplements were offered to Gilman Scholarship recipients during the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is open to all U.S. citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below:

• The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of his/her study abroad.
• The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student's accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
• The applicant is studying abroad for at least 28 days in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 28 consecutive days.

Fellowship 2010: Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

The US State Department has announced the opening of the Critical Language Scholarship application for summer 2010 study.  Unlike the NSEP: Boren award, this one does not carry a government service requirement.

The Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes is a program of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers and the American Councils for International Education. The Critical Language Scholarships Program was launched in 2006. In 2010, 575 scholarships will be available in thirteen languages, including Russian.

Critical Language Scholarships (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.

• Applicants must be currently enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level.**

Fellowship 2010: Middlebury Summer Language Fellowships

Middlebury is offering two types of full summer language fellowships for 2010: the Kathryn Davis fellowships and minority fellowships.

Kathryn Davis:

The Kathryn Davis Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages. These 100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from Kathryn Davis to address today’s critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States.

For the fourth year in a row, 100 Davis Fellowships are offered to cover the full cost of summer language study from beginner to graduate levels in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, and Russian at the Middlebury College Language Schools. Fellowship grants cover the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools.

The Davis Fellowships are merit-based and intended for exceptionally qualified individuals with demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: international, global, or area studies; international politics and economics; peace and security studies; and/or conflict resolution. Individuals in other fields, including working professionals, are also encouraged to apply if their field of expertise requires them to study one of the critical languages listed above.

Minority fellowships:

In the summer of 2010 the Middlebury College Language Schools will offer scholarships for students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges, Tribal Colleges, and Hispanic Serving Institutions. Recipients of these scholarships will receive funding to cover the comprehensive fee (tuition, room/board) for one summer of language study. Applicants for this scholarship should have strong demonstrated interest in any of the ten languages taught—Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish—and must have the support of their home institution. As with the Davis fellowship, this fellowship covers the full comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) at the Middlebury summer Language Schools.

To qualify for consideration, students need to submit all application materials postmarked by February 2, 2010.

Fellowship 2010: NSEP Boren Fellowship

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to add an important international and language component to their educations. We focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

There is a government service requirement for awardees of this program's funding.

Boren Scholarship Eligibility 

• Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are:

• A U.S. citizen at the time of application.

• A high school graduate, or have earned a GED, and are matriculated in an undergraduate degree program in a U.S. post-secondary institution, including universities, colleges and community colleges accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

• Applying to engage in a study abroad experience in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that meets home institution standards. 

• Planning to use the scholarship for study abroad, and the study abroad program ends before you graduate. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

Boren Fellowship Eligibility

• Boren Fellowships are for graduate students. You are eligible to apply for a Boren Fellowship if you are:

Fellowship 2010: Eurasia Dissertation Support Fellowship

Title: Eurasia Dissertation Support Fellowship

Description:
The Eurasia Dissertation Support Fellowships provide financial and academic support to graduate students near completion of their doctoral programs in the social sciences and related humanities. The program provides fellowship awards of up to $25,000 for the 2010-2011 academic year, designed to allow advanced graduate students concentrated time to devote to the intellectual development of their projects and to write up the results of their research. In addition to financial assistance, the fellowship program provides academic support and numerous networking opportunities, as all fellows will be required to attend two workshops - one at the beginning and the other at the end of the their fellowship term. These workshops will allow fellows to discuss their work in an interdisciplinary setting with a number of their peers and resource faculty, as well as provide a number of training sessions explicitly geared towards advanced graduate students.

The Eurasia Dissertation Support Fellowships are intended for applicants who have completed their dissertation field research and/or data collection, who have made significant progress in outlining emergent, innovative contributions to scholarship, and who are willing to reach beyond the academic community to make their work known and accessible to a variety of publics.

Qualifications:
All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States as of December 10, 2009.

Applicants must have obtained ABD status (must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. degree except for the dissertation) by the application submission deadline. Proposals and research must pertain to one or more of the regions and countries currently supported by the program (please see FAQ for further information). We will consider comparative projects if one or more of the countries/regions under consideration are supported by the program, and if our Selection and Oversight Committee determines that the project contributes to the field of Eurasian Studies.

Applicants must be able to attend two development workshops for fellows (dates TBD) that will be held at the beginning and after the end of the fellowship term (fall 2010 and fall 2011, respectively).

Please note: Award recipients' universities are required to make a cost-sharing contribution of not less than 10% of the award amount. Global Policy Fellow

Salary:  The program will not provide a living stipend or per diem, as fellows are expected to continue collecting their usual salary from their employers.  The program will provide visa support, office space, computing and communications facilities, research and language support, a modest budget for research and travel within Russia, and cover the cost of airfare between Russia and the United States, and housing in Mosco.

Description:
The Carnegie Moscow Global Policy Fellowship is designed to bring senior American experts from a wide range of fields important to the future of the U.S.-Russian policy agenda to spend time in Moscow. Fellows will be housed at the Carnegie Moscow Center for a period of one to three months, with opportunities to visit other relevant institutions in Moscow and elsewhere in Russia, while pursuing a policy-relevant research project.  

While in Moscow, fellows will be expected to take part in the life of the Carnegie Moscow Center, including participation in seminars, workshops and conferences, and may organize seminars and other meetings to discuss their research topics. At the end of each term, fellows will be expected to produce a brief policy paper for publication and presentation at the Center. When possible, fellows will also be encouraged to present their findings at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, D.C.

Qualifications:
The Carnegie Moscow Global Policy Fellowships program seeks individuals with significant experience working on issues of major policy concern but who are not "Russia hands." Fellows may be policymakers, whether in or out of government; policy experts; legislative staff, scientists and technologists; lawyers; businessmen and others. Any field of global policy relevance is eligible, but applications will be particularly welcomed that deal with issues of emerging relevance to the bilateral agenda, including climate change, energy efficiency and sustainable development. Preference will be given to applications that fall outside the Carnegie Endowment's core research areas (for these, see http://www.carnegie.ru/en/ and http://www.carnegieendowment.org).

While there is no specific tenure requirement, applicants should be able to demonstrate a strong track-record in their fields and an ability to influence the relevant policy discussions upon their return from Moscow. Knowledge of Russian or prior experience in Russia is not required. Fellows will be expected to remain employed at their U.S. organizations throughout their term in Moscow.

My Note: IREX is a fantastic opportunity for people looking to do field work in Russia or the near abroad.  I was an IREX scholar years ago and highly recommend it.   Everyone in the organization, from the program officers, in-country staff, to the logistics officials were very friendly and efficient.  They award 20 grants for the masters level category yearly.  I am not sure the amount for the other two categories.  My advice is to be sure your research proposal is solid.  Also have contingency plans if possible.  They are not looking for an astrophysics level proposal.  They just want to ensure you know your reasons for wanting to conduct research, and that you know how to handle unforeseen circumstances.  Good luck :)
