Tajikistan TSEP Agriculture Value Chain Internship

Description:
The intern will be responsible for helping to implement and monitor the agricultural value chain component of the Tajikistan Stability Enhancement Program (TSEP). The program is developing high impact value chains in each of its three operating areas (Garm, Shaartuz and Khujand). The program is building the capacity of farmers, producer groups and other value chain actors through technical support, targeted vouchers or small grants and development of improved market linkages and market based service provision for small hold farmers. The program is improving links within the value chain through agricultural fairs and improved access to financial services. 

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree preferred (complete or in progress) in an Agriculture or Business-related field
  • Knowledge of agricultural value chain theory and its application
  • Knowledge and experience with surveying and data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis and related statistical procedures
  • Experience with MIS/GIS systems helpful
  • Experience with the development of agricultural enterprises (preferred)
  • Experience living in a developing country
  • Knowledge of Russian, Tajik, Farsi or Uzbek would be helpful but is not required

Duties
 * Conduct capacity building needs assessment of NGO partners involved in counter-trafficking through field visits
 * Research, analyze, and draft report on reintegration assistance to victims of trafficking as practiced in Tajikistan and best practices in international cases
 * Compile success stories, best practices, and lessons learnt on key counter trafficking issues
 * Identify key improvements to monitoring and evaluation system within the CT unit
 * Prepare accurate narrative reports and proposals as necessary
 * Support IOM Mission with additional tasks as needed

Expected Outputs
 * Capacity building needs assessment identifying training needs for NGO partners
 * Research report on reintegration assistance

Qualifications:

International Intern, Europe and Eurasia

The ABA Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is currently seeking a candidate for its International Volunteer Internship Program in the Europe and Eurasia Division to work primarily on its program in Ukraine. The Ukraine internship is well suited for recent graduates or students currently enrolled in master's or law programs. ABA ROLI's program in Ukraine currently aims to improve the system of continuing legal education for lawyers, provides expertise and analyses to governmental bodies to ensure compliance with human rights standards in the area of criminal law reform, and works to increase access to justice and legal representative for citizens throughout the country. The intern will be a key member of the Ukraine office and will assist in core responsibilities such as maintaining program records, writing reports, using evaluation tools to assess program progress, organizing administrative functions, conducting background research for programs and proposals, , attending meetings with stakeholders, and monitoring current events pertaining to ABA ROLI programming in the country.


The Ukraine internship will provide the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the U.S. Government assistance process, legal reform initiatives and priorities for democratization in the country, and international development in general. The intern will be under direct supervision of the ABA ROLI Country Director in Ukraine, and will attend meetings and events with members of staff and other interns.

Interns for the Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center provide important research and logistical support to assist these efforts and support program staff. They work closely with the Program Director, the Director of Programs, the Assistant Director, and Black Sea Energy and Economic Forum staff. Interns are also encouraged to pursue their own research projects and to write and publish their own policy briefs or blog posts.
Duties are not limited to, but will include:

  • Conduct research to support the activities of the Director and his deputies.

  • Draft correspondence and take notes at Council roundtables and strategy sessions for program archives.
  • Handle an array logistical issues for program events and activities.
  • Write analytical pieces for publication on the New Atlanticist blog.
  • Help draft and edit policy briefs and task force reports. Each intern is responsible for completing all tasks stated above and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Must be at least a college senior in good standing, a graduate student or a recent graduate.
  • Must demonstrate proven interest in international affairs with an emphasis on trade, economics, energy, or the Eurasia region.

Tajikistan Youth Employment Internship

Description:

The intern will be responsible for helping to develop and implement the youth employment component of the Tajikistan Stability Enhancement Program (TSEP).  The program seeks to improve the skills of youth and enable them to secure full-time employment.  This may be achieved through working with existing vocational training programs or by matching youth with masters in their field.  The program may also consider supporting youth who have innovative ideas for a small business (with a small start-up grant or loan).

OBJECTIVES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The intern will work closely with program staff (particularly the Youth Employment Officer and the Economic Growth Manager) to research and develop opportunities for youth employment.  The intern will be expected to identify the most promising skills-training opportunities and work with the Youth Employment Officer to connect interested youth with opportunities that can be translated into sustainable employment.

DELIVERABLES:

  • Report on current opportunities for youth skills training and employment in the region, for both male and female youth.  Report should include reference to any examples of best practice in the field of youth employment from a survey of other organizations.  Report will specify opportunities for further developing youth skills training / employment opportunities.
  • At least three success stories describing how youth are acquiring / have acquired skills and/or found employment through TSEP



Qualifications:
Experience working with youth, particularly related to youth skills training and/or employment
Experience working on small business / income generation projects
Experience living in a developing country

The responsibilities of the intern will include (but are not limited to): • Assisting in the research and writing of a report on the future of U.S.-Russia arms control; • Providing administrative and logistical support related to planning a series of meetings and trips in Washington, DC, and in Moscow; • Tracking and summarizing English and Russian-language media sources on security issues. 

Qualifications:
Graduate student focusing on international relations, security studies, Russian studies, or a closely related field; • Advanced Russian language competency (reading and speaking) is required, experience studying or working in a Russian-speaking country is a plus; • Previous experience arranging international travel and events is preferred; • A background or interest in nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, or U.S.-Russia security issues is preferred; • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; • The ideal candidate will be extremely professional and well-organized.

Description: 
  • Research assistance for the Program Officer in the areas of CEP's work (labor migration; electric power sector transparency and accountability; human, social and economic rights; child labor in the cotton sector/agricultural reform);
  • Assistance to programmatic staff in developing, contracting and editing CEP's policy paper series;
  • Preparation of a literature review on the role of development cooperation and civil society involvement in promoting transparency and accountability;
  • Occasional administrative support to the Program Officer and Program Coordinators;
  • Additional institutional support as necessary.
 Qualifications:  
  • Undergraduate or graduate student in political science, international affairs, policy studies, regional studies (former Soviet Union);
  • Strong understanding of relevant political, social and economic issues of Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus;
  • Proven excellent research and writing skills;
  • Russian language skills preferred but not required;
  • Standard MS office applications proficiency;
  • Availability to work up to 19 hours/week.
Upon acceptance, the intern will need to provide a letter from his/her university indicating that he/she is receiving credit and/or funding for the internship.
