Title: Education Specialist

Location: Sitka & Mount Edgecumbe, AK

Compensation: $52,639 to $68,425 annually, plus federal benefits.

Description:
You will plan, develop, present and direct others in the presentation of formal educational activities in the park, local community, and beyond.  Participating with the Chief of Interpretation, other staff members, and representatives of the educational community, you will develop a park Education Plan, including education goals and program priorities.  You will plan, develop, publicize, and present on and off-site education programs that directly address established local, state, and national curriculum standards for each grade level, while featuring park resources and communicating park themes, significance, and relevance on intellectual and emotional levels.  Programs include activities that are specifically designed to support program and park themes and incorporate age and curriculum appropriate hands-on, inquiry-based techniques.  

You will train and direct other park staff on the development and presentation of educational programs and activities.  Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of groups including educations, federal, state and local government agencies, private organizations, and Native entities.  Develop and maintain extended learning opportunities such as websites, distance learning via satellite, electronic field trips, educational kits, trunks, displays, newsletters, brochures, etc.  Develop and or coordinate park Junior Ranger and Student Ranger programs.
 

Qualifications:
Basic education requirements can be met by either of the following:
Education: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to this position, i.e. education, natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, social sciences, museum sciences, behavioral sciences, or sociology.

Combination of education and experience: You must have a combination of education and experience, courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above. Specialized Experience and/or Education: In addition to the minimum education requirements, you must have certain higher level education or specialized experience to qualify for the GS-09 grade level of this position.  This qualifying education and/or experience can be met through any of the following:

Specialized Experience: To qualify using specialized experiene you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service.  Specialized experience is experience planning and implementing a comprehensive, curriculum based education program serving elementary through college students
 

Education: To qualify using education you must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
